I have an amazing community in a Facebook group who are positive, motivational, inspirational, supportive, and all striving to become a better version of themselves. I started the group 4 years ago and it is one of my favorites groups.
It’s a safe place to share struggles and triumphs and we always encourage every member to be open and honest. We also don’t judge or discriminate as we are all such different people.
Since health and weight loss are highly affected by nutrition, every week we run a nutrition challenge as a group. There are 8 challenges that run a total of 9 weeks. And then we repeat. The best thing about this process is that you can see progress from one challenge every 9 weeks. For example, one of the weeks is AVOID DAIRY. When I first started the group, I wanted to be dairy-free, but was still having it 2-3 times each week.
Even though my goal was always 7 days dairy-free, I would still have it a few times a week. After a few 9 week rounds, my dairy started going down to 1-2 times a week, and then to once a week. I eventually succeeded with my goal of 7 days without dairy!! Baby steps (of course) but in the end I accomplished what I set out to do.
And as most of you know, I am now 100% dairy-free and have been since the beginning of the year.
Now if you don’t WANT to do all 7 days, you can set your OWN goal. For example, one of our weeks is AVOID SUGAR. I for sure want to cut down on sugar, but I like to have a treat now and then, and I love oatmeal with Peanut Butter and Grade B Maple Syrup. So my goal is for sure to cut down, but not necessarily to cut it out. So I look at my week ahead and my activities and decide how many days I want to aim for. It’s usually 5.
I like to do the challenges from least to most difficult for most people so that we see some successes before the struggles set in.
Today we will talk about WEEK #2: EAT BREAKFAST
I chose this as our second challenge because it’s still relatively simple to implement into any routine AND most people have already heard at some point that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” so it’s a pretty easy sell!!
Why is eating breakfast important???
1. Wakes up your metabolism and digestive tract from slowing down during sleep
2. Fills you up so you are more likely to make healthier choices for snacks and lunch
3. Gives you an opportunity to get more nutrients in your body
4. Gives your body and brain energy to be focused and productive during the day
5. 90% of people who purposefully lost weight and kept it off long term eat breakfast daily
The excuses I hear most often why people don’t eat breakfast are…
1. I don’t have time.
Here are 5 easy on-the-go ways to get your breakfast in…
Or just grab a couple bananas and eat them in the car!
2. My stomach doesn’t like food first thing in the morning.
Wait 10-15 minutes and then eat simple fruit like a banana or melon. These are both easily digestible and will still give you all the 5 benefits I listed above.
3. I’m not hungry when I wake up.
Eat earlier the night before, eat less for dinner, or just have something small in the morning (like fruit) to get your digestive tract working. Your body will adapt to whatever you do for it. Especially when it benefits your body.
Personally my favorite breakfasts are either fruit or a fruit/veggie smoothie. These sit well in my stomach, give me tons of energy, and are light enough that I can work out or run immediately after. Plus it’s a great way to get in several servings of fruit/veggies first thing in the morning. If I am doing a longer work out or have a stressful day, I lean more toward the smoothie since it is higher in calories and fat and typically has a protein powder in it. Here is what I use for a clean, vegan protein…
Here are a few words from our challengers…
“I am happy to report that since I got back on track with eating breakfast every morning, I have lost 5 pounds. I haven’t really changed any other eating habits, just eating breakfast and having more snacks throughout the day since eating breakfast makes me sooooo hungry. Yay for boosting metabolism.”

“The breakfast challenge was difficult because my husband and I didn’t usually eat it. It has been one of
the reasons we weren’t losing weight. We decided to do the challenge as it was the same time as him going back to teaching. So every morning we ate breakfast even if it was a piece of fruit and a smoothie. I did notice my clothes fitting looser. Along with exercise (yardwork) this challenge helped me lose 9 lbs.”
“I do the Shakeology shake, it’s fast and keeps me full.”
AWESOME, RIGHT!?! And you will notice results in only 7 days so you have nothing to lose!
