I know a lot of people who don’t celebrate their birthdays, who don’t like to make a big deal about living another year, who are not excited about getting older, and who don’t want everyone to know it’s their special day. I am NOT one of those people.
On my birthday, if you don’t already know it’s my birthday, I will let you know. Even the checkout lady at Whole Foods knows it’s my birthday that day!
And I don’t just celebrate one day, I pretty much celebrate the entire month!
I figure I am the only person I will be with from the day I am born to the day I die. I better learn to love and celebrate me!! Plus…I made it another year. Through smiles and tears, lessons and growth, successes and failures, I am still standing strong! And that, my friend, is something worth celebrating!!
So it’s hard for me to imagine anyone not wanting to live it up on their birthday!! Maybe they aren’t excited about getting older? I am!
My mom got married and had me when she was 20 years old. I can’t even imagine what that would have been like. By the time she was 24 she also had my sister and brother. My dad worked a lot of jobs to keep mac and cheese on the table and my mom was working and taking care of 3 babies. As a kid, I rarely remember seeing my mom happy.
When I was 17, my mom met the man she is now married to. And I finally saw her happy. So yes, this story has a happy ending for her…and me. She gave me hope. If she could be happier at 37 than she was at 27, then so could I. So throughout my teens and twenties, when I felt sad or lost or stuck or unsure, I knew there was light at the end of the tunnel. I knew my life would be better when I got older.
And it has gotten better every single year. I love that I love myself now. I love that I know what I want and I’m not afraid to go for it (and ask for it). I love that I care more about the people I adore and less about the haters. I love that I know myself enough to know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea so I don’t need to be accepted by everyone. And I love that I have people in my life who love me unconditionally, no matter how crazy I get. WOW! That’s a lot of love!
Plus I am in a sport where old people are ROCKING IT and are racing into their 80s. They are active and healthy and fit and loving life. I am excited to be there too!
So YES! I am celebrating hard core! My life matters and I am excited to share it with anyone who will listen. Your life matters too! You matter! You make a difference in the lives of so many people around you. So don’t be a party pooper and be sure to let the world celebrate you too on your special day!
How am I celebrating this year? Well there of course will be magic and fun all month long, but on my actual birthday, November 6th, here is my plan…
Swim 4,300 meters
Bike 43 miles
Run 4.3 miles
Eat lunch at Taj Mahal in Fort Collins
See the new James Bond movie, Spectre
Eat popcorn possibly
Go to bed
Now THAT is the perfect day!!
What are you planning for your next birthday? I hope it’s a little bit of everything you love!!
Happy next birthday to you!
See you soon!!
